FIRST SPEECH to the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII18):
It is a beautiful collective intention to Revitalize & Restore a way of life that is in alignment with the natural order laws that govern all of us. Let us Affirm this inclusive purpose of the transmission of Tribal Treasure Knowledge though women of the world, as Life-givers & Nurturers of every generation in a healthy-helping teamwork with the male Protector-Providers of families and communities.
Madame Chair, Congratulations for your appointment. All my relatives, Ya’ateeh’ shikeiI shidinee’. My name is Patricia Anne Davis born of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw for the Tachii nii and Kin yaa aanii of the Dine’/Navajo Nation of the American Indian tribes of this land – Gratitude to the Original Indigenous inhabitants of this Territory, including the Lanaape. In their language, Pah Taw Ma Wii Kan, translates to “Prayer House”, our spiritual sacred-SELF in our sacred place within the universe. We are all here as a Child of All Nations, Indigenous to the Earth, Water, Fire and Air. We have been Guardians of the Traditional Knowledge of our tribes, through Oral Tradition and Ceremonial Lifeways for centuries. Now, please note that many people are speaking about us, for us, down to us, or ignore us. Therefore, let us set one day aside to listen and hear the Traditional Knowledge strategies & recommendations from the International elders, healers & leaders of the Indigenous Nations of the world.
However, I must ask, how do we Reframe our thinking out of the “Empire Folly” of perpetual invasion, violence with brute force, genocide and plunder? We must reject & eliminate the Acculturation & Conversion policies of punishment for speaking tribal languages in Public and Boarding Schools that exclusively promote “English only” laws, which most of us have experienced. The following translation from Dinebizaad, the holy people’s language is an inspiration to remember and reawaken to the Oneness with creator within creation simultaneously, that we call hozho. It is impossible to say “but not you”. Those who think they exist outside of & separate from Oneness are in Denial as Destroyers. Our collective task at a practical level is to ensure the following inspiring & unifying principles are manifested for future generations:
Alchinni Baa Hozhonii: Beautiful Children we are – All of us. From the East, born spiritually holy & whole within the essence of spiritual humane family love; Made of earth, our physical self, water, our emotive self, fire, our intellect & temperature; & air, our in-breath & out-breath rhythmically existing in harmony within the environment of earth, water, fire & air. Yet there are those who, in their Oppressive Parasitic Socio-economic systems put us all in imminent peril with their addiction to Greed, never enough & never satisfied.
Corn is food & our “Tree of Life”, the symbol of Social-Economic wellbeing. It is through Traditional knowledge & wisdom we access, medicinal herbs & healing practices & processes for future generations:
Beautiful Youth we are – All of us: From the South, we learn the knowledge & skills to earn a living to travel on our life-journey
Beautiful Parents we are – All of us: From the West, we gather to cherish each other & celebrate family & community love in healing ceremonies, promoting peace within our hearts and fireplace, the hearth of our home
Beautiful Grandparents we are – All of us: From the North, we remember & reawaken to SELF-Reverence and Reverence for the natural order to walk in balance as a humane being between Mother Earth and Father Sky
Beautiful People we are – All of us: Travelling on the four corn-pollen prayerful footsteps with our relatives & ancestors, we are restored to a blessed way of life:
Balance in living; Harmony in communication; Peace in the family and relationships; Beauty in the environment; and, JOY within our hearts and home, Ahe’hee’, Thank you
